Infra, banking reforms top priority in Budget: Pranab

Taking charge as the country’s finance minister, Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee, in his first official press conference, re-iterated that he would present the full Budget in the first week of July. on May 27, Mukherjee had first said he planned to present the full Budget in the first week of July and hoped to pass it by July 31.

Outlining the government’s plan of action, the finance minister said he would focus on infrastructure in the Budget and would also address long-pending reforms for the financial sector. “Reviving the economic growth is the government’s top priority,” he said.


Mukherjee also said the fiscal prudence will need to be kept in mind. “We are assessing the impact of the three doses of stimuli that have been already provided to the economy.”

Talking about what is ailing the Indian economy, which has been affected by the global financial crisis, Mukherjee said industrial business was hurt by the cost of funds and their availability. “We want banks to commit to a more benign plan of action. I will meet bankers to discuss the issue of interest rates.”
